Time to have your say – where would you like additional bicycle parking in Malahide?

Fingal county council has ordered 400 bike racks, with 1/3 due to be installed this month (June 2020) based on suggestions from FCC staff, councillors, and the public. Locations already decided include Low rock.
What do you think? Perhaps at each park entrance (Estuary park, Robswall park, Malahide Demesne)? What about along the coast road – at Biscayne, Seapark, Island view etc.?
We’ll be asking for bike racks near local shops, to enable residents to stay local, shop local and shop by bike.
Let us know in the comments below – we will collate your feedback and pass it on to the council.
Main Street is pretty narrow for bike racks. If New st is pedestrianised perhaps either end or even St James’Terrace near charging points. Can’t think of anywhere else in centre. Otherwise Bridgefield CP.
The Diamond, top of James’s Terrace, Seabury playground, Castle playground
I would love to see them in place of the parking spaces from the Diamond to the post box (Top of Townyard Lane) on the Mall. Business in Malahide has been on a knife edge for so long, the way the village is doesn’t work, so let’s make Malahide a village that embraces bikes and gets people out of their cars. People complain about a lack of parking as a reason to skip Malahide and go elsewhere like the pavilions, if we get them out of the car it’s no longer an issue. Give it a few years and see if we can change the culture
This is a difficult one as the footpaths in Malahide are not wide enough as is and can be difficult to manoeuvre on foot at the best of times and extremely difficult for people in wheelchairs and with buggies.
Outside Paddy Power’s on New street would be a good bet as it’s the only place with an extended footpath, The Village Green already has a space for bikes, Outside Sylvesters Church again has an extended footpath or Maybe an area on St James Terrace beside the Charging ports but this would mean losing a couple of parking spaces.
In the village at the corner beside AIB. Also down near Starbucks. In the main car park in the Castle near playground.
On the Green as there is plenty of space there. What about Londis. Also Broomfield pitches to encourage more cycling instead of lifts to training. Great to see a push for more cycling but would love to see more cycling lanes even painted markings on the roads is better than nothing. With Covid I’ve been able to go out more with kids on bikes and would love them to be able to cycle to activities rather than rely on lifts, proper road markings would make this a bit safer.
Beside the AIB or beside Scotch Bonnet a lot of bicycles could fit in just one of the car park spots in these locations:
I think having them further out eg Seabury church, Londis, Hilltop, Broomfield etc. This allows people to cycle to the village or train instead of using the car. Also need to ensure there is adequate spaces in the village – train station, Bridgefield, James Terrace etc.
Around estuary park would be great!
Yes they are badly needed so this is great. In SuperValu car park, close to the cross roads/diamond as possible, near Tesco / incorporated into the new design of the green.
Malahide needs more car parking, not less. All efforts to drive cars asway from the village will cause businesses more problems and lead to a less vibrant village. Bike proposers think nothing about old and less mobile people. These people have been the mainstay economically of the village over the years. People need to think about those working in the village. They need places to park near their offices\shops\banks etc..
I think it would be interesting when more activity returns to assess how many spaces close to the village are used exclusively by shoppers versus other use. Plenty of all day parking slightly outside village core and not too far to walk.
I think parking is essential but it should be outside the village heart as much as possible. There are far too many cars choking up the centre. The centre of the village is no longer a pleasant experience with traffic congestion and trying to cross the road is an uncomfortable experience. It is also dangerous with cars bikes and pedestrians competing for the same narrow spaces. Much of the traffic in the centre is only passing through anyway. All of main street should be car free from Old Street to Town Yard Lane and the whole of New Street as well. Then provide lots of car spaces within walking distance on both sides.
Bikes at train station, castle carpark, along estate along swords Road, broomfield, robswall, portmarnock Beach, estuary near seabury
Waterside and Seabury
Train station and supervalu car park.
Old Street behind the church where the old well is.
I know this is private property, but the racks need to be in the village, yet not add to traffic problems.
The AIB and Scotch Bonnet locations are good also.
Hi. Would you mind adding requests for Swords too? I would like to see parking locations at the Pavillions shopping centre, Dunnes JCs on the Rathbeale Road, Applewood and Rivervalley. If you can’t include this in your submission would you please send me the contact details of Fingal CoCo.
Thank you.
Thank you for all the updates of what is happening in Malahide, I have reposted and assume that it is ok to do so. I am sending you a link as I am very concerned that the information on this article has suggested that the people of Malahide have lost the remaining public area on the Lady Acre to the cricket club, as you would aware this is a private club and it has already taken a lot of the public park, without rebuilding the beautiful stone walls. I am not against the club in anyway in fact I enjoy it but Malahide castle has already suffered at the hands of private companies and I do not believe that we should loose anymore of the public space. I look forward to hearing from you , Regards Noel

Great to have bike racks at the bridge field car park , on the re- vamped Green , James Terrace and along the coast road . I bought an expensive electric bike this year and would like to have secure parking for it close to the village Center.
A significant number should be built into the new plans for the green (more than already there).
Entrance to the proposed new greenaway to Donabate so cyclists can easily lock up and take advantage of local bars and restaurants.
Outside Sylvesters Church would be great too. Having them easily visible and accessible to non locals is key.
As much as I am in favour of bikes over cars, removing anymore parking spaces is now what Malahide needs. Every single time a parking space is removed, more trees are cut down at Bridgefield to allow for more spaces there so last thing we need is an excuse for councillors to tarmac any more of the castle grounds.

A lot more cycle paths in parks (around perimeters) and along the coast/estuary (grass) needed.
Underground carpark in Malahide.
More conveniently located disability parking bays.
The Tree House Cafe, golf, tennise. Avoca, court yard
It’s very important to have bike parks for people visiting SuperValu, so in the downstairs carpark and/or outside Kerrigan’s. How many bikes can you fit in a single car parking space. This has the potential to revitalise our village
Very good,I would like to know where they would put the racks beside Low Rock. Fingal Co.Co. wont maintain the walk along the coast rd. one of the best and used walk inthe Country .
Cyclists think only of people their own age and fitness levels, of course they will never age ,like Dorian Grey ! Malahide needs additional car parking spaces—why do many people from Malahide go over to Dunnes for their shopping ? Golly, would it have anything to do with the free car parking
there ? The entrances to public parks, Bridge Field car park, the Green all seem like good areas for bike parking and if there must be one in the village, James Terrace would be the least harmful place to use. Of course the Super Valu car park could be filled up with bikes and the old folk, when not under house arrest, could carry their messages home !
Hi,
Some observations on cycling and car parking
1) Having facilities to park bicycles should be seen as a good thing as it will encourage more local people away from cars to access the village shops. Leaving more space for others who don’t cycle or need their car for mobility reasons.
2) There are a lot of great suggestions on locations and all would be welcome, I think it is important to make sure they don’t add to street clutter and block walking space and impact mobility of pedestrians.
3) Rather than taking up a lot of space with a bit of imagination there could be single and double capacity locking facilities erected almost anywhere in the village for people to use for short visits. If I want to drop into SuperValu or pick up a takeaway or go to the Post Office or Pharmacy there is nowhere close to most places to lock a bicycle for short periods, 5 or 10 minutes. The absence of anywhere close to shops to lock a bicycle contributes to more people taking short car trips (point 1).
4) Supervalu could easily put in a solution to re-reimburse people for car parking when they visit the store offering a competitive solution to free parking in Swords or Portmarnock if that is an issue.
5) In response to the perspectives on parking. I think there is likely sufficient parking in the village, it is the way that it is utilised that is questionable. It would be interesting to find out how many cars are parked for most of the day meaning shoppers can’t get access. There is a lot of long term parking between Bridgefield, the coast road past the tennis club and the beach carpark with a short walk to the village. There is also parking at the rear of the Marina Village Development that is little used.
6) I think the Green redevelopment was a lost opportunity if as a community we were ever serious about an underground carpark, although the potential for flooding there is an issue. The other place for an underground carpark is Bridgefield. That would serve the community for generations.
7) Leaving aside places to park and lock bicycles and park cars there is a need to have proper cycleways segregated from cars through the whole area and secondly to enforce the existing speed limits.
(1) Inside the gate in Estuary Park (opposite Centra), along the west side and bike holders should be placed on hard surface tarmac so as not to create divots in grass park area.
(2) At Centra Shops.
(3) Start of the Estuary – past Swords Sailing Club.
(4) Opposite Red School on Yellow Walls Road (behind boat)
